It's not easy being a teen, especially when you're battling with an outbreak of teenage acne. It's an unfortunate pairing but pimples and puberty tend to go hand and hand. However, it is comforting to know that you are not alone in your battle against blemishes. Some stats put the figure as high as 17 million for those who have acne and it is thought that approximately 85 percent of people in their teens and early twenties suffer from acne. Like other forms of acne, the exact cause of teenage acne isn't really known. However, it is thought that hormones have a huge part to play. During puberty the body begins producing male hormones called androgens. These hormones are found in both guys and girls, but males do produce more of them. This is why boys tend to get more severe bouts of acne than girls. If you think females are getting a better deal, they're not, because they are more likely to suffer from acne in their 20's, 30's and 40's than males. Here are some of the teen acne treatments:Benzoyl Peroxide kills the bacteria that causes acne. Used on the skin, (topically). Topical antibiotics, a powder or cream used on the skin to kill the bacteria. Benzoyl Peroxide combined with an antibiotics, such as erythromycin or oxytetracycline. Antibiotics kill bacteria and reduce inflammation. Retinoids. (Accutaine, Roaccutane). This drug unclogs the pores and encourages skin renewal. Some users report side effects such as emotional problems, so it is important that your dermatologist carefully monitors the treatment regime. |
